Force install of XP app (on Server).
Posted by Patrick Flaherty on May 20th, 2008

Hi,

I try to install a given app on Server; it detects Server and says it can only
install on XP.

Is there anyway of forcing the install?

thanx - pat

Hi Patrick,

Some software are only meant for client workstations, so if the app's
MSI/installer file checks for your OS version, then most probably its best
for you not to do a force install.

Hi Jabez,

I'm a developer; do a lot of db work; and SQL Server (of course) only installs
on Server (and not XP). So that's been my desktop for years. And I don't have
a second machine at work. Yes I could make an XP partition with one of the
various tools; and have done that before; but didn't want to go to the trouble.

The app I want to install is Google's Calendar Sync. To get my tasks out of
Outlook; into Google tasks (or whatever it's called); and over to Thunderbird
(which is what's on my laptop).

As I've trawled the web there seems to be general agreement that this is the
best/easiest way to get your tasks out of Outlook and into Thunderbird.

Wow.

So anyway, Google's Calendar sync 'connector'. I wouldn't have guessed that
there's any way in which it would run afoul of Server as opposed to XP. You
never know - but I would guess not.

Or maybe Google bolted it to XP for their 'own reasons'. Mayber Server's locked
down in a way that will _prevent_ the connector from surreptitiously sending
data back to Google. Which XP doesn't do.

That shoe's on both feet these days (as it were).

pat
