- Ghost Image Restore
- Posted by Jim K on March 13th, 2006
I have an application server with Windows 2003 loaded. The server is part of
an SBS2003 domain. I took a ghost image of the server so I could have a
snapshot available if I wanted to restore. I made some changes to the server
but then decided I wanted to restore the image.
I tried to logon to the network, but it wouldn't work. So I figured I would
just remove it from the domain and readd.
I tried to logon as local administrator. It starts to load Windows, but
then gives you a message that it's logging off. I tried in 'Safe' mode, but
that didn't work either.

This is a well-known issue. It is caused by your system drive letter
having changed from C: to something else. The fix is easy:
1. Use psexec.exe (www.sysinternals.com) to start a Command
Prompt on the problem server, working from any networked PC.
2. Make a note of the system drive (echo %SystemDrive%).
3. While still working off a networked machine, open the registry
of the problem server.
4. Edit HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices and rename \DosDevices\X:
to DosDevices\C: where X: is the drive letter you noted in Step 2.
5. Reboot the problem server.
