Installed 320gig hd, but...
Posted by Dr. Palpatine on March 20th, 2007

Hi,
I currently run Windows 2000 Server. I had to install a new hard drive. I
purchased a 320gig hd, but it will only read 128 gig. Why is this? Thanks.

Either your BIOS does not recognise the disk properly (which
you can see during the boot-up sequence), or Windows does
not have 48-bit LBA enabled:

If I change the registry values, will it automatically release the rest of
the hd to use? Or will I have to reformat? thanks Dr. P

AFAIK it will make the whole disk accessible under Windows,
without affecting the partitions below 128 GBytes. However,
I would still back up my important files first.

Hi, I do not know if you received my question from earlier? I looked in the
BIOS and it shows 131gig, not 320. What do I need to do? Is it the bios or
the LBA? And, would I have to reformat the HD if it is one or the other?
thanks. Dr. P

If your BIOS does not recognise the full disk then you have
two choices:
a) Live with it, or
b) Upgrade your BIOS

I am reluctant to upgrade a BIOS, after having had some
bad experiences.

I agree. I may just have to live with it. Last time I had a bad experience
with a bios and it messed up everything and the bios was shot and the system
was dead. thanks.
