Log on using Dial-up problems.
Posted by bank2640 on October 12th, 2004

Hello everyone.

(I hope I’m posting this in the right newsgroup, if not please let me know
where I should post it.)

I currently have one branch office that is in a very remote location. The
way we connect this branch to the main office, is by connecting the
workstation to internet via DSL connection and then we VPN into the main
office.

Previous to the DSL connection we had a direct ISDN connection to the main
office, so when a user powered up the workstation they would enter their
username and password, and select Log on using dial-up connection, and
authenticate and connect.

Now that we switched over to a DSL and VPN solution, we are running into a
few problems. I have created the DSL connection and the VPN connection on the
workstation. I have also configured the VPN connection to first dial the DSL
connection if needed. The problem is that when a user is at the logon screen
and selects to Log on using dial-up connection, only the DSL connection shows
up on the list and not the VPN connection. Therefore, the user doesn't
connect to the main office and can't authenticate which results in a failed
logon. The only way the user is able to logon to this workstation is if their
password is cached and then manually connect to the internet and manually
connect via VPN.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get my Windows XP to list my VPN
connection when I select Log on using Dial-up connection?

I would really like to be able to leave this workstation as part of the
domain for security reasons, so the option of configuring this workstation
part of a workgroup with local accounts, is out of the picture, unless the
above is not possible.

Thanks in advance for all your help! I greatly appreciate it!
