- Macintosh & SBS 2003 - back to the basics question
- Posted by brad on January 13th, 2004
I have tried everything that I know of to get a Mac 10.2.8 to logon to my
Small Business Server 2003 but haven't been successful. Maybe I am butting
in some boneheaded login information:
Domain: the last two parts of the fully qualified domain name, xxx.net
User: the name of the user without the domain before it
Password: the password
Let me know if my problem is something above.
Thanks,
Brad

Brad:
Try using the Apple clear text authentication discribed in this KB...
Error Message Occurs When You Use a Macintosh OS X-Based Computer to View a
Windows Server 2003-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316076
You may also need to set the following in the Domain Controller Security
Policy...
Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools. Expand Local Policies, select
Security Options and set the following options:
Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data (always):
Disabled
Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always): Disabled
(This info was gleaned from a recent post by Cliff Zhang, MS)

Thanks for you help; however, I am aware of these issues and had already
configured the server per your advice/article without success.
Interestingly, I installed a 2 week trial of Thursby's software, ADmitMac,
on one of the Macs and it logs on fine now. I really don't want to pay the
$120 per Mac that this would require, however, when I know that it is
supposed to work without it.
Do you by any chance also know why my Entourage (which has recieved all of
the required Exchange updates) doesn't sync the calendar and contacts with
the server. In Entourage, the calendar and contacts appear in email
format - strange. Email, however, works fine.
ADmitMac didn't fix the Entourage problem - didn't seem likely that it
would, however.

Hmmm... Can be much help I'm afraid. Don't have any Macs running under SBS
2003 at this time.

Hi brad!
How are you connecting to the server? Via SMB or AFP? Since you refer to the
Domain in your first post I'm guessing you're using SMB, so you might try
using the single Windows domain name, not your fully qualified domain name.
Your email problem sounds like you don't have WebDAV running, which is
necessary for a proper view of the calendar.
Hope this helps! bill

Thanks for your help, William.
I am connecting via SMB. It is my understanding that Samba is better than
AFP (not to mention that I can't, for some reason, write to the UAM folder
that is mounted with the AFP connection -- even after running the installer
on the Mac).
When you refer the the "single windows domain name" do you mean the xxx.com
without the ".com?" My PC, MS Smartphone, and Mac with ADmitMac are
connecting properly with xxx.com.
Regrding Entourage's calendar, I'm pretty sure I have WebDAV running: Server
Management / Advanced Management / Internet Information Services / Server
Name / Web Service Extension / WebDAV=allowed. Is there anything else I
would have to do for WebDAV?
