Migrating From NT 4 server to Server 2003
Posted by Brian K on April 28th, 2008

I have to migrate our NT 4.0 server over to a new server 2003 box, will I be
able to install the 2003 server into the same domain name or do I need to
create a new domain, if it is not possible to keep the same domain name, will
I have to copy the users profiles on there desktops over to new profile when
they join the new domain? Does ADMT have this fuctionality

Hello Brian,

If you do an inplace upgrade you can keep the old domain name without any
problem. Just make sure that you use not a single label domain name like
"domain", should be "domain.com". If you have a single labe domain then use
ADMT to prepare for a new name.

Meinolf,

This will be a new server not an inplace upgrade, does that still apply?

Hello Meinolf Weber,

What you also can do, install NT4 on the new server, make it BDC in the domain,
disconnect the old PDC from the domain, make the new hardware PDC and run
then the inplace upgrade. Just make sure that you have all drivers available.
