- Migration: windows 2000 server/exchange 5.5 to sbs 2003 /exchange 2003
- Posted by etribe on March 5th, 2004
Hello,
What is the best way to migrate from windows 2000 server/exchange 2003
to sbs 2003/exchange2003? It said in the documentation from microsoft
that the fqdn and netbios name of the destination server must be
different from the source server. The domain name of the old server is
registered (ex. domain123.com) and will there be any problems if I
name the new server (sbs 2003) as domain.local? this is what windows
is recommending during setup.
how about for exchange, will i encounter any problems accessing the
mail server (mail.domain123.com) if the new sbs server has a domain
name of domain123.local?
separately, is there a way to migrate the data of SharePoint Team
Services to the new SBS server?
Thanks!

Hello.
Actually the registered domain name will not come into play (internally)
that much with the SBS 2003 server. The reason for the recommended local
domain name being "local" is to keep down confusion with the SBS DNS server
about who is responsible for the registered domain (normally this would
remain the same - the Internet DNS server). Normally the SBS DNS server is
only responsible for providing internal name resolution and will "forward"
Internet requests to the Internet DNS server. Now with Exchange it will
naturally install with a domain name of "local" (domain123.local) and if
you go no further that would be the deault "Reply to" SMTP addressing for
all users. However once SBS 2003 setup is completed you need to run the
"Connect to the Internet" wizard (CEICW) which will configure all
networking and Exchange domain names. In the area of this wziard where you
are asked for the domain name you would put in the registerd domain name
(ie domain123.com) which will be set up as the primary SMTP address in the
Exchange recipient policy so that your inbound mail will be handled and
outbound mail will contain the correct "Reply to" addresses.
I will have to research the Sharepoint part of this question a bit further.

Thank you Albert for your response. Anyway, I found some links from
other posts about migrating STS to WSS.
