Mirror testing fails and cannot reboot successfully
Posted by rlojr on December 2nd, 2004

I have mirrored ide drives on a W2K server. I tried a test by disconnecting
one drive then the other to see if the system would boot up. Regardless of
which drive was disconnected, I could not boot the system. I have created a
boot disk which allows me the option of which drive to boot to if both are
connected. However if a drive is disconnected (power or IDE cable) the
system will not boot. The bios does not see the drives. Is there mirroring
software that will allow me to boot the system, in order to break the mirror
so I can replace the drive and reconnect the miror to resynchronize it?

Thanks
Bob

Is this a basic computer setup of server or do you have the real deal? It
sounds like you have a basic system running server. The first troubleshooting
procedure is to let BIOS know which drive you have running on your system.
Once this is done then you can troubleshoot the software side of mirroring.

Thanks, keep us posted.

Rob man

The server is a file server. Running SP4 on Windows 2000. The Bios
settings state Primary Drive 0 ........Hard Drive
Primary Drive 1 ........Hard Drive
Secondary Drive 0.....OFF
Secondary Drive 1.....OFF

System boots fine and gives me the two choices of the Windows 2000 server
or the Mirror as long as both drives are connected.

Thanks

Thanks for your info. I think maybe if this was a real case scenario you
would replace the failed drive with a new one and then boot with the floppy.
Once the Active drive is recognized under the OS and your server is up and
running, you can proceed with the necessary steps to establish the mirror
back as it was originally. Format and establish the mirrored set. Once the
process is finished and data is now transferred to the new drive, you are
ready to rock and role.

Let me know, thanks

Thanks Rob man

So far it works when I break the Mirror, connect a new drive, and use the
floppy to boot. I have a couple more tests to do before I will feel
comfortable putting this server into a production environment.
