more than 2 terminal services on SBS 2K3?
Posted by JM7 on June 25th, 2004

I have heard that you can setup more than 2 terminal services clients with
SBS by downloading some software from MS? Is this true?

This should allow you to just use SBS and not have to get an additional
server to run WIN 2K3 SERVER. - I am told.

If not why would they sell SBS with 5 CAL.

There is so much confusion and lack of knowledge out there amongst the
retailers - it isn't funny. It is almost a case of buy it and experiment
and learn yourself. at the moment they are giving away SBS with HP machines
so there must be a catch - or has everyone realized that SBS is a giveaway
item?

Hi,

No, SBS does not have TS in Application Mode - only Administration Mode (now
known as Remote Desktop). There is no patch from Microsoft for this, and
there won't be.

Also, the CALs cover authenticated clients. Even if SBS 2003 _did_ do TS in
Application Mode (as SBS 2000 did), you would still need _separate_ TS CALs
(not regular CALs) in order to be licensed for the Terminal Service
connections

Hello,

I believe that you can have 3 TS sessions. Two remote, and one console
session. Other than that, no, SBS cannot act as a Terminal Server.

(Btw, CAL and TS CAL is not the same thing)

John, sorry for the confusion you see out there. Confusion is caused by
people (those retailers,e tc. you mentioned) who are working from outdated
or incorrect information, make too many assumptions, and are too lazy too do
research.

In this case, SBS2000 did allow the option to run TS in either a remote
admin mode (limited to 2 sessions) or in Application Mode. However, although
they allowed it, Microsoft and those of us in the SBS newsgroup highly
recommended NOT placing TS in application mode.

So, with SBS2003, Microsoft listened and removed the ability to switch TS to
App Mode.

Thanks Kevin

So why was it recommended to "NOT place TS in application mode"??

I am getting SBS as part of a HP server bundle so I will probably look at
all this app and admin mode (more from an education point of view).

Hi,

An SBS machine is doing a LOT by default, adding TS in App mode also makes
it into workstations for the users connecting, so it becomes VERY heavy on
resources. It's also harder to lockdown (secure) TS in App mode on a domain
controller (which SBS must be), so this is better security-wise
