my incremental backups keep getting bigger
Posted by Bradley on September 9th, 2004

Hi,
Can anyone help. I have been doing an incremental backup
everyday i have sceduled the same incremental backup
everyday but even when i make no changes to my folder and
add nothing to what i am backing up the backup file size
gets 40mb bigger everyday which is the size of the folder
i am backing up. I thought incrementals just backup
changes?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi Bradley,

Incremental backups backup all files that have the archive attribute.
Files that are backed up will have the archive attribute cleared.

Are you sure you are doing an incremental backup and not differential?
Differential backups will not clear the archive attribute.

I'm guessing it is the shadow copy information. An index
so to speak, that contains information of the files you're
backing up.

It sounds like you are "appending" the same file each day. Which means that
you have several backups imbedded in a single file. If you are using the
same file name on the same media every day, that is the default behavior.

In the advanced settings, you can change to "overwrite" instead of "append"

or

use a different file name or different medai

Yes i think i did set it up to append and not over write.
Thank you. will this clear the archive box once it is
backed up now then?
Many thanks.
