Need to run a App (FOX in DOS) but dont want to log from a windows
Posted by juancho98 on May 11th, 2007

I am running a application made in fox for MSDOS in novell 3.11(DOS) and we
are instaling a Windows Server 2003 as a File server, so need to know if
theirs a way to ... without instaling a windows OS (W95,W98, XP...) we could
logon WINDOWS server 2003 and run this application. Is the only application
it has to run all day long.

The reason think, its clear ... dont need to have a big amount of software
upload, if we are only going to use the application made on MSDOS-FOX (thats
on a folder on a file server (winser2003)

What we need to know if theirs a way to logon to WinSer 2003 and run the app
without loading any windows version of OS... ( could it be from DOS..???.)

thanks

Yes, if the app will run on Win2003 (most will but it is old) -- and Win2003
is a "windows OS".

You may have to use the compatibility settings if there is trouble running
it.
( I can run most everything on Win2003 except programs that do low level
access to hardware.)

Win2003 is a version of Windows. (NT 5.2)

Thanks for your response. Think I did not explain the point well...

The problem its not the app.cause we can run it from several clients.

I can run the app thats on a Windows server 2003 folder share, from a Vista
client ... from a Xp pro client... from a win98 client. But ... we have a
point in the company where we have a computer registering the time of the
employes where we use a DOS computer, and want to continue using it cause its
very stable. The problem is how can we conect it to the server (WS2003).
(until now we have use a novell server but we are migrating and have this
issue to resolve)

The computer is locked up and the only reacheable thing to people its the
card reader to a security issue thinks its not very important. (It will bee
ok to logon with a user and password in a automated way)

So ... that it ... what we need its "simple"... access with a MSDOS machine
a shared folder in a windows server 2003. (the logon process)

thank you in advance for your response..

What do you mean by "connect"? What network services are you using?

Connecting on the network implies some service running on the server.

Some resource you need to use.

That can be done if your security allows for it.

Shared folders do not imply a "Logon TO that machine" but authentication.

It sounds like you may wish to do this:

The (actual) MS-DOS computer needs to (net) USE a share from the
Win2003 Server.

If that is the problem there is SMB (file sharing) software for DOS.

Try the Client directory on the Server CD-ROM (or maybe an older Win2000
or NT server CDROM). On the CD-ROM you will find "Lan Manager" or
SMB client networking software as well as DHCP (to get an address) software
for DOS machines.

Keep asking if I am not understanding your problem.
