Ntbackup problem
Posted by JP Breton on February 10th, 2006

I am runnign Windows 2003 SP1 and having some random backup problem with
NTbackup.

For no reason, (nothing in the logs) the backup just don't run but again
randomly. I can work on monday and tuesday but not on wednesday??
but if I run it manually via Schedule task it works ok.

The NTbackup is using a custom CMD script.

Here it is:

ntbackup.exe backup "@d:\backups\backupscripts\dailydata.bks" /n %TAPENAME%
/d %TAPENAME% /v:no /r:no /rs:no /hcn /m normal /j "dailydata" /l:f /p
"4mm DDS" /UM

Thanks for any help

Regards

JP

Have you check the Event Logs under the Application Event Log for more details.

I seriously have nothing in my application logs. (I do have somethnig when I run it manually)

The job is set to run at 9:00 pm
If I look at my Schedule task, I have in the last run time, 9:04 and nothing else.?? but no backup.

The backup last 2 hours.

I don't have any other job running on the server at that time.

Any hint?

Are you using a rotation of tapes for each weekday? Do you see a pattern of
failures?
Have you tried using new tapes?

You can check the following 2 more logs:

The System Event Log for possible references to the Removable Storage
Service
The Scheduled Tasks Log by clicking View Log on the Advanced menu.

Good luck!

Yes I do have in my system log an Removable Storage
Service error. : Event Id 98 : RSM was stopped.

Could that be the cause?

Most definitely. ntbackup relies on RSM. Check out the comments for this
event(specifically Scott's) on this link:
