ntbackup in server 2003
Posted by Kevin on September 22nd, 2004

We have hit a snag I am hoping a lot of others have ...

Every windows 2003 server install that we have done
results in the same: the scheduled backup works then it
doesn't, then it does, then it doesn't.

Also when i do manual backups I can do it the first time,
the the second night the ntbackup.exe won't run until i
reboot the server. as you can tell it is a pain in da
bum!!

does anyone have any solutions? It only seems to be in
server 2003 because all my 2000's work perfectly. Thanks.

The first step in such cases is to examine your various logs:
1. The log generated by the Task Scheduler
2. The log generated by ntbackup.exe
3. The Windows Event Logger

What do they report?

The logs may give you a clue but won't solve the problem.
This has been a headache ever since server2003 was imposed
on us. Strongly recommend a product called BackupAssist.
It sits on top of ntbackup and anticipates all the stages
where it can go wrong. All my sites now run this product
and I've had no further headaches. Check out
www.backupassist.com and get a trial download.

Regarding BackupAssist, does it run as a service or must the
application window remain open for scheduled jobs to run?

I am playing with the trial version and my daily job seems to have
stopped.

Thanks,
Jack
