- ntbackup and Windows Server 2003
- Posted by Curly on October 30th, 2004
Hi,
I'm new to IT admin. I was told by the people that built our server (and
want to maintain it) that ntbackup does not work with Server. Is this true?
They tried ntbackup but without luck, use Backup Exec, and recomended that we
purchase it.

The people who told you that ntbackup.exe does not work
on a server are both ignorant and incompetent. NTBackup.exe
works very well on all versions of Windows 2000/XP/Server
when used properly. There are, of course, other backup
products that may be better or easier to use.

I agree.. these people are ignorant of NTbackup and its workings. To
sweeten it more in Win Srv 2003, it now will perform scheduled backups from
the logged off state. Except for some advanced functions of the others,
that's all most of my clients will ever need!

Hi,
NTBackup can be used to do almost all what a system admin wants to do with a
backup software. But there are somethings which it cannot do.Specially it
cannot backup to CDRW and DVD.If you are talking about Windows 2003 system
you can backup the open files also(which was a long awaited feature) using
the volume shadow copy with ntbackup.
There are some problems assoicated with the ntbackup which have been fixed
by microsoft.plese check the following link.

Gosh I better tell my exchange server. It thinks it's been backing up with
NTBackup ever since it was installed. I don't know how it managed to do a
test restore from those backups as well!
Seriously, NTBackup doesn't have as many features as some of the 3rd party
backup tools you can buy, but it is very good at what it does, when it is
setup correctly.

Thanks all, I love to triangulate the truth and go to horse's mouth instead
of the 'other' end. Hope you all don't mind if I copy these posts to the
guys at CCR Companies, Inc.
