Performance monitoring to a 2003 server from a 2003 server-Error
Posted by David Personette on November 16th, 2005

I have a monitoring server that runs 2003 server and can monitor numerous
2000 servers fine. However when I run performance monitor to conntec to a
2003 server I get "Unable to Connect to machine". I have validated
everything in the article link below but still have the same problem. The id
I am using is a administrator on both machines and the performance monitoring
service is running under this same id. Any one have any idea's? All I can
find when I search on the web is for what is stated in the link below.

It seems to me that after you have made the changes indicated in the article
that you need to restart the Remote Registry Service on the machine you are
trying to access. The article doesn't mention this, but I have found it to
sometimes be necessary.

I figured it out. Its was the wording in the article that messed me up.
When it said "You must have at least Read access to the following registry
keys on the remote computer:" I assumed it meant a user id. I added the
Local Service account to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib only and gave it read access. From there
everything worked. Thanks for your response.
