- is it possible to use Virtual Server 2005 for DR
- Posted by משה on March 17th, 2006
Hello,
I am thinking about an idea and I would be happy to hear what the forum
users has to say about it.
Using the traditional Disaster Recovery we have to keep a spare hardware for
each Server type. I thought maybe I can back up an image for Virtual server
2005 for each server (lets say that I don’t have any storage limitation) and
in case of Hardware crash I will bring the server throw its last backup image
as a virtual server.(until we get a new hardware)
Do you think it can work ?
Thanks
Moshe

This greatly depends on the role of the server in your environment.
If it's a file server, there should be minimal complications but how often
are you going to make a backup to virtual server? If it's a week old you'll
be missing a lot of data on your file server but data can always be restored
from a traditional backup.
One of the worst scenarios is with a DC. Rolling a DC back to a previous
time will cause a USN rollback and cause strange replication issues that to
resolve you will need to demote / promote the box anyways. You can read up
on USN rollbacks at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885875
Basically, the long and short of it is that different types of servers will
have different complications when restoring in this manner. The role of each
server would need to be looked at and it would need to be tested in a lab
before I would be comfortable using it.

It really depends largely on how you are backing up your computers.
Virtual PC and Virtual Server use their own emulated hardware set. A
long as when you restore your servers to Virtual Server, you don'
overwrite the registry or hardware settings, file servers shouldn'
have too much of a problem.
However, DCs and other systems will have a horrible time trying t
restore due to registry problems between the first system and th
Virtual System.
Another option is to run all services on a single or more machine
running VPCs on Virtual Server. After that, you can easily back u
each Virtual Server and should you need to restore it on another PC, i
will pick up immediately as if nothing had ever happened. :
