Product Key and Group Policy
Posted by Scott McCarthy on August 13th, 2004

I have to deploy Office Xp and some stand alone Outlook
2003 installs via Group Policy. I need to know if there
is a way you can deploy the apps without them asking for
the product key on the first run of the programs?

I cant have users typing in product keys.

Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong but I don't think you can do it using the
retail product but only with the volume product. Each
volume product order using the same key so I think you can
script it.

Well, we do have a volume license. I need to know how to
script it.

You don't need to script it. Simply create an Administrative Install on your
server and then create an office .mst file using the Custom Installation
Wizard from the Office 2003 resource kit. That will allow yo to insert the
product key into the installation and users won't need to enter in manually.

Hello,

This KB Article can maybe help you with this:

"HOW TO: How to Deploy Office XP over a Network"

I think that the people in the office newsgroup can help you better with
this:

I tried using the Office Custom Installation Wizard in
the resource kit for Office XP, however, I see no option
in all 22 screens to enter the product key. Anyone know
how to do it? There is a section to import a registry key
and I guess I could do it that way, but for some reason
it doesnt see like the right way to supply the key.

My memories of Office XP is a bit hazy (we've just gone up to 2003) but I
think in that case the Product Key is automatically integrated when you
create an Administrative Install point.

That should be correct. When you create administrative install point, it
should ask you for license key somewhere during process. When rolling out to
clients it won't ask again.

I finally found the solution. You use the Office XP
deployment kit and on the last screen where you enter
variables, you enter a variable of PIDKEY= and put the
volume license key. Microsoft doesnt make this easy to
find.

Here is the solution:
