- Remote Desktop on to a W2K Box question plz
- Posted by PeOpLeS on November 21st, 2004
Hello Folks,
I have a very simple question, maybe>>>
I am sitting at a windows XP Pro PC trying to connect via Remote Desktop on
to a W2K Server Box.
The fire wall peeps have asured me that Port 3389 TCP is open. I have
allowed the admin account on the W2K server to accept dial-in.
I can not seem to get a connection. Is there anything else i need to do
server or client end to acheive this connection?
Plz note, i have no trouble connection to another W23 server on a different
Domain via this method!!
Any help and assistance appreciated. :0

If you use dial-in, what's your modem connected to? The server? If so,
what role does the firewall play for this connection?
To test if TCP port 3389 is open, use this command on your remote machine:
telnet aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd 3389
where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the ***external*** IP address of your server.

Hi,
It is pretty hard to give any certain answer. Here are few things to check:
* make sure that terminal service is installed on Windows 2000 server -- you
will probably want to have administrative mode
* can you test the access to Windows 2000 server while on the same network
(no firewall in between you and the server)?
* do you have any outbound filters on your side that would prevent you from
connecting to 3389 TCP port?
What is the exact error that you receive when you try to connect (e.g. when
connecting remote or when connecting locally on the same network).

Of course you need Terminal Server - this is the software than
runs your session on the host!
