Remote Installation Service Fails After Win2003 SP2 Install
Posted by Ben on March 15th, 2007

Hi,

I just installed SP2 for Windows 2003 Server, after the reboot, I got an
error message saying a service failed. When I view the event log I see:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 15/03/2007
Time: 09:54:28
User: N/A
Computer: RISSERVER
Description:
The Remote Installation service terminated with the following error:
The specified procedure could not be found.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I've looked on Eventid.net for event 7023, and remote installation service,
but there is not entry. If I run RISETUP and do a diagnostic check, event
viewer says that the service was successfully sent a start control, however
it then shows the above error immediately after. There are no other errors
in the event log, can anyone suggest a fix?

Cheers

Ben

OK, ignore me, I think this is due to Remote Installation Services being
replaced by Windows Deployment Services! That'll teach me to click 'Yes'
when Windows Auto updates pops up!

Yes - the same thing just happened to me! Thanks for spotting that it was WDS which broke it. SP2 installs it automatically but does not seem to remove the BINLSVC.

Did you do something to fix this, or find a work around. In the services
console, the remote service is set to automatic is stopped. If you try to
start you get the same 7023 error.

Thanks,

the new Windows Deployment Services....

You don't have to totally get to grips with WDS, it still runs a backwards
compatible version of RIS. So although I have WDS installed, our clients
still get the old RIS setup screen.

Yeah,

Go to control panel > administrative tools. Where you will find 2 new icons,
Windows Deployment Services, & Windows Deployment Services Legacy (RIS). You
can control (start/stop, add images etc) WDS & RIS through these 2 consoles.
