Remove "This Computer" from the Domain Login Drop-Down
Posted by Eric Robinson on May 14th, 2008

Is there an easy way to force terminal server users to login only to the
domain? I don't want them to be able to click the domain drop-down and
select "This Computer." We are using Windows 2003 Standard R2.

Hmmm. I guess you could have them use UPN logins instead. But since they
won't have local server accounts, only domain ones (right?) does the
presence of the dropdown really hurt anything?

You might post in microsoft.public.windows.terminal_services.

They can't log on locally. If they select "This Computer" the logon will
fail. However, for the sake of preventing confusion, I want to remove the
option. I don't want them to even SEE the "This Computer" selection. These
are ASP-hosted terminal servers. The more I can simplify things, the fewer
support calls we'll get. You know how that works.

Sure. I'm just not sure that it's possible unless you force UPN logons only
(presuming one can actually do that, which I'm not certain one can).
However, the "This Computer" option should not be selected by default unless
the last successful logon was *in* that context, so it seems to me they'd
have to go pretty far out of their way to see & select it.

You could give them preconfigured RDP files.

The customers are all on their own domains or workgroups. The terminal
server is in our AD domain. For some reason, we seem to hear freom a fair
number of occasions where the drop-down defaults to "This Computer." That's
why we're trying to get rid of it.

Well - you can send them RDP files, as suggested.
