- remove the read-only attribute
- Posted by Belinda on November 23rd, 2004
i have installed windows small business server 2003 and all is working in
terms of the network etc but i have a few folders that are within the share
hierarchy that were copied from Cd-ROm from an old server to the new server.
When i go to the properties and remove the read-only attribute and apply, all
goes through fine but once you click Ok and then go back in to check it is
removed the read-only attribute is turned back on. Does the same whether i
specify to apply to folder only or to folder and subfolders etc.
Any ideas?

Ignore the "read only" attribute on the folder. Check the files. Did you try
using a command prompt?
attrib *.* -r /s <enter>

This is known feature of Windows 2003 and should not cause any problems.
You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders

We have the same problem. Only users with administrative access can open the
files in a non read only state on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP systems.
We do not give normal users administrative access. This cannot be ignored
when the users aren't able to edit their own files stored on the server.
Accessing the files is not a problem. Any and every folder and file is tagged
read only.
We have run the attribe command.
