- Replacing an existing Domain Controller
- Posted by Sol F. on August 6th, 2004
I would like to replace an existing Domain controller in a
small office.
What is the recommended way to accomplish this.
Specifically, I need to preserve the existing users and
groups along with their security settings.
Do I set it up as a BDC and then promote it to a PDC?
Would that work (I can copy all the data later)
Do I just use Backup/Restore?
Thanks

Hi,
My recommendation would be to setup additional controller and replicate it
with existing one (this will replicate all users, groups and other
settings). Details on how to do it depend on what domain you currently have
(Windows NT, Windows 2000, ...).

Thanks for the very quick reply.
Would you know off-hand how replication works on a Windows
2003 Server (where can I find the command)?
Thanks again
