- SBS Sharepoint Problems
- Posted by Greg on March 3rd, 2004
Hi,
I have done a fresh install of SBS 2003 and for some
reason i cannot configure a SQL Database for Sharepoint.
It tells me that the SQL server is not running or access
is denied. I can see sqlserver.exe in the Task Manager
etc.
How could i fix this?

Is the Sharepoint Site working ?
Have you done the WindowsUpdate yet or do you have a newer cut of SBS
2003 with Sharepoint fixed ?
( Sharepoint by default loads into an MSDE.
You'll need to Upgrade it when you install SQL Server if you want it as
a full SQL Server DB. )

I have always assumed that - as SBS 2003 contains SQL Server - that the SBS
2003 implementation of WSS automatically installs to SQL Server.
I am sure that you as a SBS-MVP know better (much better) than me, but is
there any reason for this (installing to MSDE) and is there any way in the
SBS 2003 installation of WSS that allows you (as with standalone WSS) to say
that you want to use the existing copy of SQL Server for WSS instead of MSDE
?
Finally which gets installed (by SBS 2003) first - SQL Server or WSS ?

Mike,
While SBS 2003 Premium comes with SQL Server, SBS 2003 Standard does
not.
The Sharepoint Services "Companyweb" is a part of both, so the only
option presumably was to load into a Special Instance of MSDE. This
instance is not subject to the normal Size and Throttling of Standard
MSDE. This is part of the "Base" install.
If the user has purchased SBS Premium and Installed SQL Server ( which
with ISA Server is no longer part of the Integrated SBS Setup ), or
Purchased and Installed a Separate version of SQL server then they can
Update the MSDE instance of Sharepoint to full SQL. ( details are in the
Sharepoint Admin docs and the Premium Disk install Docs.)
So, Sharepoint installs first as part of the SBS Setup, while SQL Server
may or may not be installed later.

Thanks Henry. A very clear summary.

Standard MSDE.
Something I'm always telling people
WMSDE is the same with standalone WSS
which I *do* know some of the ins and outs of]

I haven't done an update as yet. The installation was
supposed to use the MSDE. I can get a website working
but i cannot do things like extending or upgrading to a
Virtual Server.
I really dont know what's going on..

I have just had a look and the problem is i cannot
connect to the MSDE. I have not installed SQL on it's
own, rather the entire SBS 2003 on it's own. What happens
when i want to convert the Website i made into a
Sharepoint Site i am told to go to Sharepoint Central
Administration and upgrade the site.
I open Sharepoint Central Administration and i am taken
to "Set Configuration Database Server". This is where i
am getting stuck.
I was assuming that using MSDE it was all done for me...
Can anyone help?

Greg,
With early cuts of SBS here was a problem with the Sharepoint
installation namely that it wasn't installing.
You need to run the windows update to get it to install.
