Server 2003 - Logging print jobs?
Posted by Mr B on March 8th, 2006

We have a Windows 2003 Server machien that is acting as our print server. Is
there any way to have Windows (or any 3rd party utility) log all the print
jobs that get sent to one (or all) of the printers? We have one color
printer that we want to track who's printing, what they are printing, how
many pages, etc. And then we want to view the information in exxcel or
something like that so we can know who's using up all the toner.

If I have to install some extra app that someone knows of, I'm game to do
that as well.

Thanks!

Why don't you just restrict the printer to certain users? Those you know
will be using it for "business only" print jobs. Then people would have to
come to you to gain access and that's when you ask them why do they need to
print color? Best to eliminate the problem before it gets started. No need
to reprimend anyone if you don't have to.

That isn't practical because there are tons of people that use it. THe
printer is available for everyone, we just need to know which people or
departments are using it more than others so they can do budgeting and see
about billing back to the other areas based on who's doing all the printing.

Even if it's for business reasons, they still don't want people using it to
print hundreds of pages of stuff. We have 3rd party vendors that are
supposed to handle that for us.

Anyone else have any suggestions? Even if we'd have to purchase some sort of
monitoring utility, we might be open to that based on the cost.

Thanks.

Thanks. I was actually turned to that site by someone else the other day and
am looking into it. Only problem is the $500+ price tag since we have more
than 35 users that print to that printer. But if that's what it takes, then
we might have to look into that.

Thanks.
