Server 2k starts beeping then hangs up...
Posted by Stacie Espinosa on June 16th, 2005

I'm not sure where to begin looking for a answer to why our server will start
beeping and be hung up untill we reset it then it will be fine for most of
the day but then we have to do reset it again. As long as it is beeps you
can't accomplish anything on it, I have looked the the error log but there
doesn't seem to be anything in there as to why this is happening. I know
this may not be the right place to find the answer but I have to start
somewhere, if anyone has any idea what could be causeing this or where I
could go to find more information that would be great. Thanks
Stacie

What are you running on the server? Any recent software or hardware changes?

It's very likely to be a hardware issue. It's possible that you're server
cooling system is insufficient or not working right. Check all the fans.
Also, most server vendors put an indicator for hardware failures on the
server panel, do you have one?

Well it could be an overheating issue but we have a monitor that watches
that, but it only happens for about two weeks then it will stop for months,
next time it happens I will watch the monitor and see what the tempatures
are. Thanks for the input.

What brand and model is your server? You should either go to th
manufacturers web site or calll their tech support to help yo
diagnose the problem. Those beeps are diagnostic tools that tell
you what exactly is wrong. Could be a bad hard drive, controller, o
even memory. You should also run diagnostics on the server to se
what's causing the beep
