I face a huge dilemma. I put together a server for tomorrow. We have a vendor
(whom we can't rescehule) coming in to move our expensive accounting software
from an older server to the newer box we bought. The server was running Linux
but I bought a licesne of Windows 2003 Server for it.
I've never bought volume licensing before. The key was emailed to me and I
can see it on my eOpen website via microsoft. When I bought the license
however, my vendor asked me: "Do you need the media for it?" I figured since
I already have about 25 copies of Server 2003 from other servers that I would
save the extra discs and use my existing media. Come to find out, as I
install this software that it says my key is invalid. I called my vendor who
asked me "Are you using an OEM disc?" Unfortunatley I am and that's all I
have. My vendor cannot get me the media for 2 business days.
I have two questions:
Since I own the license, is it possible to install the server using one of
my other server keys (from a Dell server for example) and then change the key
after installation to my volume key? I want this all to be legit and don't
want to go through the entire install just to find out I can't change the key
or that microsoft will shun me.
This issue is annoying bc I only need the disc for 20 min while I install
the OS. Is the media avaialbe for download anywhere??
All this for trying to save a disc!!
