I get this error message when trying to update a Windows 2003 Standard
Edition server to Service Pack 1

"Service Pack 1 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free
(retail) version of Service Pack 1, or vice versa."

Any idea why?

Did you install the Checked/Debug version of Windows 2003 Server Standard?
If so, that is normal.
That version is intended for developers.
