- Setting permissions for user home folder
- Posted by confused on June 10th, 2006
Hi all,
We've just installed active directory and are in the process of migrating to
windows 2003 server. I want to set up a folder on one of the servers called
Private, and each user will have a folder in this Private one. Each user
should only be able to see and modify documents etc in only their own
folder. I don't do the idiots guide to windows 2003 server course till later
in the year and I have to confess that I'm in all sorts of bother trying to
do this apparently simple task!! In UNIX, and Novell, this is very easy and
I don't think Microsoft would have made this difficult. I even ended up at
one point where administrator couldn't make changes to Private and I thought
that would have been impossible. I'm now back to Private as a shared folder
that everyone has access to, and 2 users with folders in Private. Can
someone give me a step by step guide to the permissions I should have for
Private, and for each user folder?
Thanks

Create a folder called Private
Create a share for the Private folder.
Share permissions:
Administrators Group: Full Control
Users Group (or a common group that all users are a member of): Modify (RWXD)
NTFS permissions for the Private folder.
Remove the permissions inheritance from the parent folder by clicking on the
Advanced button in the property sheet for modifying NTFS permissions. You
will be asked if you want to copy or remove existing permission. Choose
Remove. Once you click OK, you'll be back to the main NTFS permissions
property sheet for the Private folder. It should be empty, in other words,
nobody has permissions to the Private folder. Configure permissions as
follows:
Administrators Group: Full Control
Users Group (or a common group that all users are a member of): List
Now create your sub folders for the users underneath the Private folder.
For the NTFS permissions of each of the users folders, follow the steps above
to remove parent inheritance. Configure permissions on each of the users
folders as follows:
Administrators Group: Full Control
User Account: Modify (RWXD)
