I have downloaded and installed MS Virtual Server (VS) 2005 on a PC running
XP Pro SP2. I have an application that has been running on a LAN for some
time. My goal is to test this app running over the Internet using Terminal
Services (TS).

I am a bit of a beginner to some of these issues, so apologize for any basic
questions, and appreciate any and all help.

To start, I have a very basic question: I understand I can set up multiple
server environments or configurations to conduct testing using VS. Does this
mean I must download and install Server 2003 on a virtual machine I first
setup in VS? That is, do I need to obtain these other OS to do my testing?

Also, and I hope this is not too much to ask, but now that I have VS and IIS
installed on my XP Pro machine, it is unclear what my next step is to set up
a testing environment to test using TS to connect to this server. Can anyone
point me to the documentation which would help me with this TS setup?

For a Host machine with XP or Vista you need to download and install
*Virtual PC* (not virtual Server)

For Server2003 and Server2003R2 (not sure if it run on Windows2000) you need
to download and install Virtual Server.

The rest of your questions are too broad for me. You will have to check out
the documentation, then come back and ask specific questions about specific
things. The Virtual PC Console has the documentation built into the Help.

Hello Markus,

You have to install a server OS the same you as would install it on real
Hardware. So you need installation media, your machine has to have enough
RAM and a good processor.

Hello Phillip,

Why not running VS on XP or Vista? I run it on Vista and it goes fine, without
any problems. Doesn't matter if NT4, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista or server 2008
are the VM's.

Ok.
I thought VS only ran on the Server OS and VPC would not run on a Server OS?
If VS runs on XP or Vista then I have to try it,...I have never used VS
because the Hosts machines I have to work with are only 3 XP machines and 1
Vista machine. So I have only used VPC (and use it a lot)

After reading the docs (should have done this before posting here, sorry), I
see where I will need to get Server 2003 for my tests.

Basically, I need to distribute this application I am testing to clients who
will install it on their networks and give access to it thru Terminal
Services. Before I can do this, I must install it on Server 2003 and do
thorough testing to be sure there will be no problems running over TS.

Do not have a budget to pick up Server 2003 at about $ 1000. I see from MS
that I can get a configured, trial version of Server 2003 on a vhd for 30
days. That should be enough time for me to do testing (I hope) of my app.

I am on a limited budget, and it appears the only way to get an extension on
30 days is to subscribe to MSDN or Technet. I am guessing I’ll need 31 days
(just kidding, but probably need 60 days for all the testing of all the app I
want to do). Anyone now if there is any way to get an extension on the 30
days?
