Slow logon after SP1 on Windows 2003 Terminal Server for roaming profiles
Posted by AdrianG on April 17th, 2005

I am running Windows 2003 Terminal Server on a number of machines. Using
group policy the profiles are all stored as roaming profiles on the file
server. After installing SP1 the logon process takes much, much longer. I
tested this by changing a profile from roaming to local and logon was
instantaneous, as a roaming profile it took about half a minute.

I thought it was related to the firewall but with the firewall disabled it
takes just as long. At the moment the log on is unacceptably long and I wont
install SP1 on the other servers.

Any suggestions what to do?

I've noticed this on W2003 SP1 Terminal Servers running Citrix Presentation
Server too, the login takes a long time at the "Applying Personal Document
Settings" stage for users with roaming profiles, the delay doesn't happen
with accounts with local profiles.

As the logon time is about 30secs as opposed to 10secs without SP1 but
logoff times are much faster with SP1 I can just about live with it, but
it'd be nice to speed up logins back to their pre SP1 times.
