Slow logon to Windows 2003 Server
Posted by Frederik on March 28th, 2005

Slow logon to Windows 2003 Server.
We have Win XP SP2 on cliens and at new Windows 2003 Server.

I have tried to set the servers IP-adres to first DNS for the cliens - but
no - it takes 3 min. to logon.

I now that many have this problem - why is it so difficult to fix ?

Frederik.

I am not sure where have a slow logon problem? On Windows 2003 server or
when your users logon to Windows XP?

Do you have Active Directory domain and are these computers members of this
domain?

How is your DNS setup on the client AND on the domain controllers?

Can you also check Event logs on the clients and the server? Check the
Application and System logs for any Errors and Warnings.

DNS is usually the main offender to slow logins.

Have you let AD Setup install and configure DNS for you?

OK, clients point to Active Directory DNS.

How about your servers? What is server's preferred DNS server set to
(setting under TCP/IP properties)?

- if it's a multisite domain, make sure you have a local global
catalog
- logon time is the same for both domain users and domain admins ?
- run rsop.msc and make sure there are no logon scripts that slow
logon procedure
- check for any other apps configured to start upon logon (startup
folders, registry, etc. etc.)
- compare nic and switch port configuration (especially speed - try
auto if it is set differently). Negotiation problems can bring to slow
logon times (I experienced it myself once, wasted half a day and
riprepped a computer several times before I found-out).

Let me know.
