Steps for adding a new 2003 server to an existing 2000 domain
Posted by deannas@cybermesa.com on December 2nd, 2005

I currently have one 2000 server that is the DC and DNS server. I
purchased a new 2003 server and want to replace the existing server. I
will join the 2003 server to the 2000 domain as a member server. Easy
enough. Then what are my next steps. dcpromo, adprep? Please advise.

Hi,

Before adding Windows 2003 DC to existing Windows 2000 domain you need to
prepare existing schema for Windows 2003 DC.

Here are details about upgrade process...

Upgrading from Windows 2000 Domains to Windows Server 2003 Domains
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...f7cb33f6b.mspx

In general what you have to do is prepare schema by running the following on
existing Windows 2000 DC holding Schema master role from Windows 2003
installation DC...

adprep /forestprep and
adprep /domainprep

Prepare Your Infrastructure for Upgrade
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...e43cbb592.mspx

Before you run adprep check that this will not cause any problems in your
environment...

Windows Server 2003 adprep /forestprep Command Causes Mangled Attributes in
Windows 2000 Forests That Contain Exchange 2000 Servers

Now you can run dcpromo on your Windows 2003 server and it will become new
DC (first Windows 2003 DC).

After you have your Windows 2003 as DC make it:
- Global Catalog

How To Create or Move a Global Catalog in Windows 2000 (it is same for
Windows 2003)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313994

- DNS server (you can use Active Directory Integrated DNS and it will
replicated to new server).

Before you remove old server, you will have to move FSMO roles to new server

Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504

How to view and transfer FSMO roles in Windows Server 2003

If your domain joined clients currently point to existing AD server make
sure you change this to point your clients to new server for DNS

Once this is done, you can turn off the server to see if everything is
working. If it is, turn the server back on and run dcpromo on it. Follow the
wizard to remove AD services from it.
