Trying to install XP Pro on a HP Proliant Server
Posted by joeetrib on November 16th, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to install XP Pro on a Proliant server but it keeps saying
that it cannot find the harddrive. I was also considering doing a dual
boot. Will this make a difference if I cannot install XP pro right off
the bat?

Patrick is correct except that its the driver for the HD *controller* you
need. Either a SCSI controller or more likely with this error a RAID
controller.

Are you doing a fresh install of XP? I'm assuming that the hard drives
are SCSI? If that is the case you'll want to place the SCSI drivers on
a floppy. When the text mode of of the XP install starts there is a
brief moment where it says "Press F6 to install third party drivers",
press F6, pop in the floppy and install the drivers.

Go to the HP website and download the drivers. I had this same situation on
a Proliant today and it works like a charm.

What are you dual booting with. If it's anything but Windows the Windows
install will overwrite whatever you have on the boot record and you'll have
to restore it. If you are dual booting Linux the procedure is well
documented.

Joe,

You should ALWAYS install the "lesser" OS first. IE, install XP then Windows
Server 2003. I've always run into issues when I do it the other way around.

The issue you are running into is XP doesn't have the Raid controller
drivers in it's inventory on setup. You will have to do a manual driver
download from HP, then when installing XP hit F6 when prompted to install
the drivers.

I used to run XP on a DL360 G4 for a bit (HP 5i RAID controller) and had no
issues.
