Unable to format partition in Windows 2003 Enterprise Server
Posted by Mike Surrett on May 6th, 2006

System configuration:

SC5300LXNA server case
SE7520AF2 Server Board
Dual core Xeon processors 2.8 2x2
8GB DDR2 ECC REG RAM
Intel SRCS16 SATA 6-Port RAID Card
Intel 6-port Hot Swap SATA drive bay
6- 250GB SATA drives, RAID 50 {leaving me with 930GB drive space}
I have created a 50 GB system partition and a 540GB data partition that is
formatted NTFS. This leaves an un-partitioned space of 345GB.
Windows 2003 Enterprise server installed, service packed and all updates
applied.

Here is the problem:

When I attempt to partition and format the remaining 345GB it runs to 100%
format then I get an error “The format did not complete successfully”, I have
attempted a number of times both with and without a drive letter being
assigned. This is a stand alone server and NOT a shared cluster hard disk
volume. No events are logged in the event viewer.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 540GB partition that is working fine and the solutions are for W2K
server and XP not Win 2003 or enterprise. I am reluctant to make the
recommended changes in the registry in fear of corrupting the current good
data.
