Unable to Install Utilities
Posted by Rupesh on May 25th, 2005

Hello,
I've been facing this strange issue for a couple of days now. I
have a Windows 2003 Std Server with SP1 running on our domain. I wanted to
download and istall the trial version of Office 2003 Standard Version. S I
downloaded it and started the installation. It started fine, But then all of
a sudden, I saw the message Rolling back Installation and everything went
back and gave a message "Installation ended prematuarily becuase there was an
error". Absoltely no other error messages. Now just for the heck of it I
logged in as the administrtor login(Eventhough the previous attempt was with
a domain admin privileges) and tried to install. his time I got an error
message
" Error: 1913 - Setup cannot update file C:\Windows\control.ini. Verify that
the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to
update it ". I checked and double checked that there was enough rights and
the file was not write protected.
This was when I though of downloading the Windows Instaler clean up utility
and tried to istall it. But then again, the same problem, same message
Installation ended prematuarily becuase there was an error".
I downloaded the Windows Installer package update 3.1 dated 15 may and ran
it. Tried the installation after this but without much success.
I have been stuck with this for 2 days now. Anyelp would be really
appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

I know that you're working with Office 2003, but you might want to take a
look at Knowledge Base article 817093 How to troubleshoot Office XP Setup
problems on Windows 2003 Server (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817093).
Many of the troubleshooting steps relate to Windows, so the version of
Office would not matter. Particularly, look a the section that discussed the
log file.

I would also suggest you post this to the Office newsgroups.

Kevin,
I had gone thru the link that sent. But it didnt help much.
had to format the server and do the installation because I was running short
of options and time. But if you cold look into this issue it may help other
users, if not me. Thanks,

Rupesh
