Utility for Checking Server Status

Is there such a thing a s a utility to check to ensure servers are up
and running. Our server froze today and we would like to have gotten
some sort of notification of the failure.

You have to buy something or download some free utility from the
Internet.

Usually I check SourceForege.net first, and then Downloads.com
maybe.

Alerts can be set for blue screens but that won't help for a cold
freeze or hardware (power etc) failure.

Yes.

But I feel that my answer has to be unfair to a number of products that I
simply haven't used or otherwise heard of. There are the big guns: hp
OpenView, Tivoli, CA Unicenter, and so on. I worked in a small shop that ran
"What's Up". Searching the web for any of those will provide links that
mention other products as well.

Some monitors use SNMP, which I've read is no longer the obvious choice for
this kind of monitoring. This begs the question of what you want to monitor,
and how. Do you want to ensure that IIS, Exchange, or SQL respond reasonably
well? Do you want to check printers, network devices, non-Windows systems?
What if your monitoring system goes down? Do you want or need something that
will not depend on your site having electricity, or a phone line or a
network connection for outbound notification? A remote site would be limited
in what it can tell you about why a server is not responding, but at least
you could know that outsiders cannot connect to a service or server.

What does your system vendor sell, support, or recommend? Does your company
have another location or parent who runs monitoring, that could at least
monitor systems that replicate to theirs?

Myself, I use GFI's network monitor, maybe worth checking out. Very
customizable.
