- Windows 2003R2 License Question
- Posted by Sova on October 19th, 2006
Hello,
We are planning to buy Windows 2003R2 and I would like to ask your advice
about number of licenses that we need to buy. We have 50 users and around 70
computers in our network. Some users use two or more computers in the same
time (for example desktop and laptop), some users use VPN to work from home.
I am thinking to buy 50 CALs "User Based" licenses (is it right?), but it's
not quit clear for me wich serer software mode should we use: "Per User or
Per Device" or "Per Server"? We have old Windows 2000 server in our network
which we are going continue to use, so should I select "Per User or Per
Device" mode?
Thank you very much for your attention,
Sova

Given that you will have two servers, use the Per User/Server model. This
way your users can connect to both servers without having a second license
for the Windows 2000 server. As for the number of CALs, you are correct
that you need 50 User CALs. The question is what about the 20 additional
systems on your network. You may want to consider 20 Device CALs so they
can also use server resources.
Note: I am not a MS licensing expert, so this information, while appearing
accurate may not in fact be accurate.
