- Windows - Delayed Write Failed
- Posted by Roger Crawford on October 25th, 2004
I have a Windows 2003 Server that is running on Mirrored 36 Gig SCSI Drives
and we are backing up to a Windows 2003 Server a Compaq ML 350 with 6--36
Gig Drives in a RAID 5 configuration. I have created a folder on the ML350
called backup and shared this and we backup from the other server to this
folder. I have write cahcing turned off on these drives and I get this error
when trying to backup to the server. I have also noticed this happening
other places with XP Workstations and 2003 Servers after the latest rounds
of patches. Anyone seen this? Thanks and what to do to fix this?

Usually, this means there is a problem with either the controller driver,
the controller itself, the cabling, or the termination on the device named
in the error.

This did not start until after the last couple of rounds of Windows Updates
and it is happening on more than just these 2 Servers it is actually
happening on my XP Workstation and SBS 2003 Server at home also. I did do a
Compaq Driver update on the 2 servers with no effect on the servers so it
has the latest and greatest drivers.

Roger,
We had the same error message pop up for my customers when they were trying
to backup their local laptop hard drives to one of my servers using
NTBACKUP. It would only happen on full backups and not consistently. Turns
out the issue was not on the server but at the client. The clients Ethernet
cards had the speed and duplex settings set to Auto/Auto which means they
are supposed to negotiate the best speed and duplex setting with the switch.
Once we hard coded the clients to settings that were appropriate for them,
either 10/full or 100/full, the delayed write errors disappears. While I do
not know if this is your problem as well, it is something worth while to
check.

I just started experiencing the "Delayed Write Error" on all Windows XP
desktops after replacing a Windows NT File/Print server with a new Windows
2003 File/Print Server. Configuring the Nics and Cisco switches for
100/Full duplex instead of Auto fixed the problem.
