Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Posted by Scott Elgram on April 25th, 2005

Hello,
I have a machine running Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0 for Web and FTP
hosting. Last Friday I installed service pack 1 and connectivity stopped.
From inside my network i was able to access the ftp sites and the web sites
running on that machine and everything seemed ok. Coming back now on Monday
I have learned people outside our network canot access anything on that
machine. After some reading I found that SP1 installs the windows firewall,
thinking that it may be the problem I tried to check its settings only to
find that it was not running at all. I checked with our ISP and although
they too could not ping the address they did not show any problems with
their network. As a last ditch effort to at least get things back to a
running state I uninstalled service pack 1 and now everything is running
again.

Does anyone out there know any current issues with SP1 that may have
caused my problem or has anyone delt with this issue before and could offer
some advice?

Hi Scott, I'm not sure if this is the cause of your problem, but I remember
reading recently that Once the Service Pack is applied (and if it discovers
that the server has a live network connection) it stops all inbound network
traffic until you have completed a post installation procedure. Essentially
this involves downloading any recent critical updates and configuring
automatic updates. You should be presented with a Wizard to follow in this
instance.

If this is the problem, once you have fully completed the installation and
configuration of the Service Pack your inbound connections should resume.
It's designed to help protect your server by reducing the exposure to attack
whilst it may be more vulnerable.

My understanding is that the Windows Firewall is only activated 'out of the
box' on new installations of Windows Server but it should not automatically
turn itself on in the circumstances you describe.

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to install SP1 yet so I can't offer any
practical experience but I hope my suggestion is helpful to you.

Regards,

David
