- Windows Server 2003 SP2 Troubles
- Posted by msnews.microsoft.com on March 25th, 2007
Hi All
I use my server to test stuff before I put it on client Servers.
I was at a client site the other night to update their server and only SP2
was available for download. So I came home to test on my system.
It is a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 & all Hot fixes applied before release of
SP2. It is a Domain Controller, DNS Server, WSUS Server.
I installed SP2 and since them the system has been extermely slow to log
into 30 minutes or longer. Once it logs in it is extermely slow to do
anything on. I received no errors during the install of SP2
Has anybody else noticed this problem. As I right now I can't recommend/nor
install SP2 on any of my client's servers.
Thanks
Fred

I've seen this and many other posts suggest to turn the firewal service on.
The firewall itself can be turned off. This helped me with the slowness.

I have the same problem with my HP DL580 servers with 4 processors.
After I upgrade to Windows 2003 SP2, it runs very slow and I cannot
access any internet sites or browse any file shares on other server.
If I take out 2 processors from the server and boot up, then it runs
fine with SP2. Also, if I keep the 4 processors in and disable
hyperthreading, then it runs fine. I have an open case with Microsoft
about this problem.

No this was not the fix - Server is not used for Internet connectiuon
Sharing.
The fix was to boot in Safe Mode and remove SP2
Now server runs as before.

I had this same problem and I too ended up uninstalling SP2. On most
of my machines, the SP2 install seemed to fail entirely. Only 1
machine successfully installed and didn't have to be rolled back due
to this login problem. Any ideas?

I do not run internet connection sharing either, but making the
suggested registery change (KB927695) worked for my DL580 with 4 DC
processors on Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2.
