xp user showing as 'guest' on 2000 server
Posted by Eric on November 3rd, 2004

We have a small office network consisting of 5 win2000 computers, a
win2000 server, and 1 XPpro machine. We use a workgroup. We get our
IPs from our DSL modem by DHCP, etc. It's a simple setup. We use the
2000 server as a file/print server (no web hosting, email server,
etc).

First of all, am I correct in assuming that there has to be a matching
user name/password set-up on the server in order for the others to
access properly (without accessing the server as 'guest')? I have it
setup this way and it works fine and if I check the server to see what
files are being accessed it shows the proper user name next to each
file. *Except* for the XP machine. It always shows the XP user as
'guest' on the server. I have matching user names/passwords but can't
figure out why it only shows up as guest. It's giving me problems
because I want to add security to certain folders on the server, but
when I do, the XP user loses access (because I'm taking the server
folder off of 'everyone' and setting to power users). Why is it
showing as guest??

Thanks guys!

Probably, you need to turn off Simple File Sharing in XP. See:

Thanks, but I think I figured it out. For some reason (???) the XP
machine had set a managed network password (never heard of it before
now). I found the setting under user accounts and noticed it had one
setting for FILESERVER, the computer I was showing up as 'guest' on. I
removed the one managed password and the server machine started
recognizing the XP machine properly.

Strange, especially as I had never even seen those XP settings before,
and that the 'managed name/password' was actually misspelled ('billl_'
instead of 'bill')

As far as I know, this feature is unique to XP Professional. I have no
experience with it - it's described here:

I guess the XP user tried to access a server drive that had security set
to 'everyone' and the guest account active. He must have typed in his
name (albeit misspelled) and told it to 'remember my password'. So
every subsequent time he accessed the server it entered the misspelled
name and the server logged him in as 'guest', even though his XP
username/pass matched one setup on the server. Interestingly, even when
I disabled the guest account on the server, the XP machine would not
even try to use the XP username/pass (which would've given access), it
would only try the managed one (and therefore wouldn't gain access).

Anyways, if you're having XP network access problems, it's a good place
to check...
