All Office files marked as read only - how? why? can't save!
Posted by Toni on October 24th, 2003

I went today to save on a CD-R a Power Point file. In the
process of saving, there was a prompt box that said the
file is a read-only file. I knew that I never save my
files as read-only, so I was perplexed. I went to my
computer and to the files and its folder and it indeed
was marked read-only. When I attempted to uncheck read-
only and press apply, after I closed out of the file and
re-opened it to re-check the properties, it still
indicated read-only. After checking that particular file,
I checked all of my files which also indicated read-only.
This has never happened before. Please help with the
problem.

By it's very nature, any file on a CD-R is going to be read only because it
cannot be changed on that media. As to the Folder attribute, all folders
under Windows XP are marked read only, it's a system attribute and is not
relevant to the user. You can change the files within a folder but not the
folder.

If you wish to make changes in the file you copied to CD-R, you need to copy
the file back to your hard drive, remove the read only attribute and change
the file there.
