Can't start Win XP Pro
Posted by Jaymo on November 13th, 2003

Upon start, I get a black screen saying that there are
errors , and with options to start in SAFE MODE, Previous
Settings, etc..I choose any of them and I get a BLUE
screen with the error message ""UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".
There is a problem with a piece of hardware or software ,
etc. I cannot get past this. I do not have a recovery cd
or floppy. Is this a HARD DRIVE failure? or a software
that has conflicts with WIN XP PRO?..The previous night, I
downloaded a software and installed okay. Could this have
done it, since prior to that , I had no problems. If so,
how do I get in to delete it?...Thanks in Advance

Please check the following Knowledge Base Article:
http://tinyurl.com/ezaj

Pay close attention to the section on your hard drive cable. NOTE: the fact
it was working does not mean the cable as outlined in the article is not the
cause. Systems using a 40 pin cable as specified are marginal and various
changes can result in failure and the message you describe.
