What do I have to do to open an excel file? I have
Windows XP with Microsoft works suite 2002.

You either need to have Excel installed (It is not a part of MS Works nor is
it a default part of the operating system) or you can install a viewer which
can be downloaded for free from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp
