File folder options will not change
Posted by at wits end on April 8th, 2006

This may be a simple question for a lot of you, but I am having a problem
getting my computer to open my file folders in the same window. I am not
sure if one of my grandkids changed something in the file settings that I
haven't found yet but now each folder opens in it's own window. I have gone
in to the folder options to set it to open differently, and to apply the
change to all folders, but they still open in seperat windows. I have fixed
it so the kids won't be able to get on the computer without me, but I need to
change this. Can anyone help? I'm running Windows XP on an EMachine.

I know you've already tried folder options but try again:
Folder Options: View: uncheck box next to "launch folder windows in a
separate process."

Sometimes Windows gets brain dead with settings and needs some "massaging"
(I prefer a kick but whatever...) to get it to do what you want. XP isn't
as bad in this respect but if the box is already unchecked, try enabling
that option and then disabling it. Wouldn't hurt to restart in between
those changes, forcing the change (both ways) to be carried out in the
registry and loaded into the shell.

Also, if you use Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer interchangeably to
browse both internet and files, Internet Explorer has a similar setting.
Internet Options> Advanced: "reuse windows to launch shortcuts." With this
setting, you want to *add* a check mark to use the same window (not open
new ones).

options in the control panal, and just on the task bar in one of the folder
windows. After trying in each area, cheching and rebooting, then unchecking
and rebooting, the silly compiter still insists on opening the folders in
seperate windows. Are there any other suggestions. I work on a lot of
genealogy files, and having 10, 12 folder open all the time gets old not to
mention tiring.
Thanks for trying! Sharon

In folder options on the general tab there is also a selection for opening each
folder in the same window.
Might try this
