files needed?

Without a fuller description of what you mean by your old files from Windows
98 and anything about your setup (did you install XP over Windows 98, are
you talking about system files or your data files) we can't reliably answer
the question.

It's in Disk Cleanup. It says "back up files for previous operation system."
( Is that a lot of files? 291021k) I really don't know how to figure how much
it is. It says "this file is needed if you want to uninstall this version of
windows & return back to your previous operating system" I Did install
windows xp over windows 98. Thanks for your help!!!

Okay, when you do an upgrade install and elect to keep your old setup, this
is the backup of your old setup that it creates. If you don't think you'll
ever need to return to your previous setup, you can delete this in
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. It should have an entry that
references your Windows 98 setup or something similar. But, do realize,
once this is gone, the only way back is to format and reinstall 98.

Thank you very much. Now I have to decide if I want to keep it or not. Does
it take up a lot of memory?

On your system, it appears to be using about 200MB.

Michael my name is Rebecca and I was reading your posts to Tina and was
hoping you might be willing or able to help me with my problems.I have 274
errors of Invalid Shortcuts, 402 errors of Invalid registry Paths and 10
errors of Invalid Startup files. I have no clue how to fix that. I am not
very good on the computer yet. I am still trying to learn. Thank you for any
help you might be able to provide.

Rebecca, from where are you seeing those errors; what viewer or application
determined you had such errors and are you having any issues as a result of
those errors, any problems running applications, opening applications,
general problems with the system?
