Lost Network

Help!
My network consists of mine(Host) and another (client). I recently replaced
my computer with a new one,(O.S.XP). The clients O.S. is ME.
I had linked them with a D-Link ethernet card and cross over cable. No
problems.
When I introduced the new computer I found that it had no connection for the
cross over cable so I returned it to the shop and they fitted a Realtek
card.
Four days later I managed to get the network up and running. No problems.
I had to disconnect the computer(Host) (in order to clean up) and when I
reconnected not only had I lost the network, the Internet had gone as well.
I restablished the Internet connection but the Networking Wizard keeps
telling me it can't complete the connection because of a configuration
error, but I can do it manually, if I want.
I press the Repair button and it keeps stopping because of the IP address or
something.
I know I could take it back to the shop, but I've spent such a lot of time
and learned an awful lot about TCP's and other things that made me realise
just how overworked my solitary brain cell has been these last few days. So
before I do I was wondering is it merely an incompatability between the two
computers network cards, or is it something more serious?
The client computer belongs to my Wife.

Thanks.

Peter
