- Microsoft XP PROBLEM
- Posted by Dave B. on January 23rd, 2007
Frustrations aside, no shop will warranty software, the reason is this, you
as the user have the ability to corrupt the software and OS on your PC.
Whether you do it intentionally or not, it is part of the PC that you can
directly effect due to lack of knowledge or ignorance. I'm not saying that
is the case here, but that's why there is no warranty on software.
Defender is a Microsoft product that does not ship with XP, either you
installed it or they did. Personally I'd remove it, it's not all that
impressive. A lemon? can't say with the info provided, but if your issue
turns out to be software, then definitely not. Even if it's a hardware
problem, a failure after 2 months does not make it a lemon.

The trick is, if you have neither the time or desire to work on your own PC,
is to find a reputable shop and develop a relationship with them, similar to
getting your car repaired, if you have no PC knowledge you have to trust
what they tell you, there's really no way around it. Keep in mind that the
shop that built your PC just bought the parts from a supplier and assembled
them for you, they have no control over the failure of these parts, They
also have no control over Windows XP. Installing XP is actually a very
simple process, I know I would have to put some effort into it to screw up
an XP installation. Dell, HP, and all PC companies do the same thing, they
don't build most of the parts they use in PC's, but when they fail the first
one to blame is usually the PC vendor, even though there was nothing they
could do to prevent or detect the upcoming failure during assembly.

Oh, and as a side note, I ran into a few of my clients machines onsite with
a Defender error in the same week, haven't looked into the cause yet.

I would seriously question Defender as the cause of the crash, as Brian
stated, the beta has expired, but none of the ones I had problems with
affected PC operation.
