cracked it! On the host pc Terminal Services was switched off for some reason hence why it seemed like a one way connection!

Update: I tried disabling and enabling remote desktop and that did not change anything. I checked the system log and there's nothing there. And it takes abut 30 seconds for the connection attempt...
