Cannot access home computer off the network...
Posted by Furry Fox on January 26th, 2006

When I am connected to my internet wirelessly from my laptop, I can connect
to my main computer by either typing in the IP Address or the computername.
However, when I am on a different wireless network it cannot find my home
computer. What I need to figure out is how to find the specific address to my
main computer, but I don't know how to find the domain name or IP Address
that only goes to my home computer. Thanks. ---Collier Farnell---

You need to call using the public IP of your firewall/router, ie. the IP
assigned to you by your ISP. You also need to forward TCP Port 3389 through
the firewall/router to the private static LAN IP of the PC you want to
remotely access/control.

To get the public IP go to the http://www.whatismyip.com site and note the
address.

If your ISP assigns a dynamic IP address then look at using a free dynamic
name service like No-IP.com that maps a fully qualified domain name (FQDN)
to your ISPs assigned IP address. Call using the FQDN.
